Microbial physiology and systems biology
My overall research goal is to understand the mechanisms used to maintain intracellular homeostasis and avert/repair cellular damage when methylotrophs (which can grow on one-carbon compounds) employ high-flux carbon utilization pathways that generate formaldehyde as an obligate metabolic intermediate. We use synthetic and systems biological approaches, paired with experimental evolution and microbial physiology to probe the metabolic and regulatory networks of bacterial methylotrophs, such as Methylobacterium extorquens PA1, to harness their potential application for biotechnology and sustainable agriculture.
