We create and engineer synthetic proteins with custom-made properties by molecular evolution. We study fundamental principles of biocatalysis, protein evolution and the origin of the genetic code and also create enzymes as 'designer catalysts' for the synthesis of chemicals and pharmaceuticals, and for biomedical applications.
