Bioremediation and resource recovery research

Researchers at the BioTechnology Institute investigate and innovate microbial systems and enzymes to combat environmental contamination and reclaim valuable resources. Core to this research is the study of pollutants — such as mined metals, pharmaceuticals, plastics, PFAS, and antibiotic-resistant bacteria — and their routes into contaminated environments. Once these pathways are fully understood, the Institute's efforts concentrate on discovering, developing, and engineering biologically-driven and controllable industrial solutions to modify and remove these pollutants. In certain cases, their research also explores the potential to recycle valuable materials, like metals, for reuse.
